1961 Fiat 500 D Giardiniera

Apart from the introduction of the Giardiniera in May 1960, and the appearance of the Nuova Sport two years earlier, the first significant change in model designation occurred in 1960 with the launch of the 500 D. The new model appeared quickly on the heels of the 600 D immediately after the annual summer shutdown.

The Sports models were withdrawn, so happened to the Convertible. The 15 bhp engine was also discarded as the 499.5 cc unit was universally adopted. Externally the 500 D could be identified by it's short sunroof and larger tail lights. By re-shaping the fuel tank it was possible to provide more luggage space in the front compartment.

In 1961 the 500 D received a series of improvements. For example a windscreen washer was included as standard equipment, the interior light, incorporated with the interior rear-view mirror, was additionally controlled by a switch on the driver's door. Production steadily increased from the 20,900 produced in 1960 to almost 87,000 in 1961. In 1964, the last full year the 500 D was built, almost 194,000 examples were manufactured.

Production of the 500 D continued until 1965, until that time some 640,000 cars had been built.
